Target Audiences

This symposium may address the professional requirements for all healthcare professionals including Physicians, Doctors of Podiatric Medicine, Physician Assistants, Psychologists, Pathologists’ Assistants, Physical Therapists, Certified Nurse Anesthetists, Pharmacists, Nurses and others.

General Program Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this symposium participants will be able to:

1. Investigate how greater inclusion will strengthen STEM fields in light of persisting gender norms.
2. Analyze the cultural and psychological pressures that contribute to the "leaky pipeline" for women in science and medicine.
3. Discover how our own gender biases influence interpersonal communication and decision making.
4. Develop strategies for overcoming the social and structural barriers that deter talented women and under-represented minorities from STEM careers.

Practice Gap

Women have been earning MD and PhD degrees in numbers comparable to men for several decades; in most other healthcare professions, women dramatically outnumber men.  And yet, women remain severely under-represented at the leadership level throughout the healthcare, academic medicine, and pharmaceutical/biotech sectors. For example, only 15% of Department Chairs and 16% of Deans are women in U.S. medical schools. Only 12 of the 210 Nobel prizes in Physiology or Medicine (that is, <6%) have been awarded to women. This symposium will elucidate the basis of women’s under-representation in medicine and science and seek solutions to the persisting glass ceiling in these important fields.
